KFC KFC Restaurant Design View Details
BRIEF: CK were asked to create a fresh look for KFC restaurants that was both practical and enduring. RESPONSE: We worked in close collaboration with the KFC team to design all elements of the environment; including external architecture, signage, fascia, interior, graphics and packaging, photography and staff uniforms. Warm colours, textures and tones are incorporated throughout the architecture, inspired by KFC’s Kentucky origins; reflecting the southern states’ ‘soul food’ heritage and architectural vernacular to create a distinctive look that is unique to the brand. A graphic language was developed, complimenting the warm interior through spice inspired hues. This was applied to all forms of brand communication, including main menu and promotional material, as well as an entire range of packaging. TESTIMONIALS: Our concept has been rolled out nationwide across the KFC retail estate.
Timberland Boot Company Timberland Boot Company ‘Place Based’ retail concept View Details
BRIEF: The Timberland Boot Company is a fusion of two parallel worlds: combining the drive and passion to provide modern premium apparel products which draw on their craft-based heritage, with their wider aim to create an organisation that seeks to belong and engage with the communities it trades within. Our challenge was to design and realise a new type of ‘trading space’ which would unite these two worlds and provide a space for the brand to put out down roots and call home. RESPONSE: The opening of the trading space marks the first of many ventures around the world, each one adapting a ‘place-based’ approach. Every potential location has a signature made-up of layers of local cultural, geographical and architectural characteristics. The aim is to identify the ‘spirit’ of this signature so the concept for the new trading space evolves out of its context, and expresses the company’s desire to ‘belong’ to its locality. From a design perspective it was about being inventive; physically building as little as possible and developing inexpensive but effective solutions by recycling, regenerating and repurposing. Our ‘place-based’ approach led to design solutions that would otherwise not have been explored. In its previous incarnation, the Grade II listed building at 1 Fournier Street in London’s East End was a banana warehouse and this provided the inspiration for each element of the retail space; from the way in which the product is displayed, to the signage and name of the store itself. TESTIMONIALS: Our holistic approach to the creation and implementation of retail design concepts was especially suited to this project. From the early models and sketches of the store concept, through to the careful restoration and regeneration of the store itself; our team of joiners and craftsmen worked seamlessly with our designers and client to ensure the overall vision was achieved. “The final result is a sympathetic restoration that conveys Timberland Boot Company’s core values and hopes for the future. A unique antidote to the formulaic store designs you see on the high street today, a moment in history has been restored to its former glory with the support and blessing of its original owners and the local community.” Vishal Gohel, Store Design & Concept Manager, Timberland Boot Company. The project was a winner at the International Chain Store Age Awards in the US.
Hammersons Birmingham Bullring Retail Vision and design guidelines View Details
BRIEF: The Birmingham Alliance selected CK as design guardians for the 1.2 million sq ft Bullring retail development in the centre of Birmingham; the largest retail led regeneration project in Europe. Our brief was to develop the Bullring’s brand and retail vision and encourage each individual retailer tenant to push the boundaries of their store formats and design concepts; focusing on signage, shop fronts, merchandising and window displays to create a stunning retail experience unique to the Bullring. RESPONSE: Our role of Retail Consultant spanned 21 months and included a diverse range of projects which aimed to inspire retailers to maximise their store fit outs relative to the overall scheme. We created a Retail Vision Book to capture the Bullring brand and communicate its philosophy and values. This was supported by the creation of an inspirational Design Guide geared towards encouraging diversity and design originality. We met with each potential tenant - helping and inspiring them to embrace the overall vision. TESTIMONIALS: Since opening in September 2003, the Bullring development has not only bought about a major transformation in Birmingham’s retail offer, but it has created a world class retail environment which has put the city amongst Europe’s leading retail destinations. On the strength and success of our involvement in this project, we remain a key player within the Bullring project planning team. Furthermore, CK has recently been appointed by London’s Cardinal Place development to carry out a similar role.
Converse Converse Jack Purcell collection at Pitti Uomo View Details
BRIEF: Converse asked CK to design an exhibition stand for the Jack Purcell stand at Pitti Uomo in Florence. RESPONSE: We designed a playful stand that reflected the sport and good natured mischief of the world champion badminton player. Referencing Jack Purcell's heyday of the 1930's, we created an outdoor badminton court scene using ersatz grass and topiaried hedges, combined with the formality of a drawing room with parquet floors and antique furniture. The eccentricities of the age are played out on the stand, marrying tradition with faded elegance. Badminton court lines overlay the whole space uniting the grass and wooden floors, running up and over the furniture. Around the stand gilt frames set against hedges and oversized damask patterned wallpaper, display the latest in the Jack Purcell product range, these frames are also used to display black and white lifestyle photography. Whilst visitors genteelly sip at their chilled martinis, the 'shuttlecock', chandelier, which hangs over the bar, provides another quirky reference to the sport. TESTIMONIALS: Following the exhibition, the stand was installed at a showroom in London.
California Academy of Sciences California Academy of Sciences Museum View Details
BRIEF: CK were appointed by the Academy's design team to re-define the role of the natural history museum of the 21st Century. Located in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, the California Academy of Sciences spans 370,000 sq ft and is home to the city's aquarium, natural history museum and planetarium. Their plan to re-concieve the traditional natural history museum represents one of the most innovative museum transformations occuring today. RESPONSE: Over a two year period we worked collaboratively with various groups, including the Academy's in-house team and architect Renzo Piano. We developed exhibition areas, signage, lighting and AV facilities. Our work was informed by customer insight and global best practice research, carried out by ourselves, focusing on encouraging interaction, sustainability, flexibility and evolution over time.
Levi Strauss Levi Strauss Women's store concept, Paris View Details
BRIEF: Checkland Kindleysides has created a new concept store for women in Paris. Replacing Levi's for Girls, Levi's Women has been designed to appeal to a clientele beyond teens. RESPONSE: The whole store has become a 'fit guide' using an abudance of mannequins to champion Levi's fit leadership and present outfit collections to tell 'key look' stories. The store uses a palette of materials which gives it a grown up feel. The timber tones of the furniture and flooring are set against pale walls, covered with a delicately patterned wallpaper, creating a softer, more feminine look. Whilst the brand embossed leather fitting room doors echo Levi's jeans patch and the simple rail system, clad in red leather is symbolic of Levi's selvedge stitching, subtly reinforcing that 'this is Levi's'. The store is located in the heart of the city's denim district on Rue Pierre Lescot, Paris.
Size? Size? Store Concept View Details
BRIEF: CK was asked to design the new store concept for Size?'s new store located on Bristol's Horsefair. RESPONSE: Taking its inspiration from the locality, the store has an eclectic mix of materials and imagery to depict the heritage and modernity of Bristol. A focal point in the store is an 1824 painting of the fair itself, which is emblazoned across the back wall of the store, whilst around the store mannequins wearing carnival masks reflect the popular 'freak shows' of this time. Elsewhere we used graffiti style graphics to reflect the present day and the quirky character of the Size? sneaker brand. A timeless black and white photograph was applied to the storefront, confirming its Horsefair location, whilst inside store fixtures and fittings take a traditional wooden crate design with wood grain printed in different colours to provide a contemporary twist.
Asda Asda Home Entertainment View Details
BRIEF: CK was asked to look at Asda's music, video and games signage and navigation. RESPONSE: Our signage provides clear delineation for Asda's music, viseo and gaming department in-store, whilst allowing easy navigation for consumers and highlighting new products and offers.
Bentley Bentley Identity View Details
BRIEF: Following the separation of the Rolls-Royce and Bentley Motors marques, we developed the Bentley identity to add strength and purpose to this established and recognised device. RESPONSE: The winged 'B' was remodelled to make it more powerful in stature and more closely reflect the spirit of the original. Broad muscular wings and a longer tail were applied to the badge to convey a feeling of balance. Identity guidelines were also created to ensure consistent application across all brand communications worldwide.

RESPONSE: A range of portable unitary was created, the free-standing Atlas designed for standing players; the modular Stacker-Ball which houses up to six consoles, allowing people to play from different heights; and the truly portable Porta-Ball intended for use on a table, bar or rested on the player’s lap. Complementing the sleek and sexy nature of the PSP™, the glossy black orbs reflect the portability and lightness of the console, becoming covetable items in their own right. TESTIMONIALS: "Launching this month, the sleek and sexy new Portable PlayStation® (PSP™) from Sony is hotly tipped as the latest must-have for anyone who cares about their electro-accessories. Boots the Chemist Ruby & Millie Ruby & Millie merchandising unitary View Details
BRIEF: We were commissioned by Boots to create stylish and contemporary merchandising unitary for the Ruby and Millie range that would support the strong colour palette and product innovation associated with the brand. Our challenge was to achieve this aim utilising the framework of the existing unitary already in place. RESPONSE: We wanted to capture the two personalities behind the brand: make-up artist Ruby Hammer and industry expert Millie Kendall. We built our concept based upon the idea of an expert behind the camera and an expert in front of the camera. Mirrors imprinted with the ampersand taken from the Ruby and Millie identity is used to add texture and depth to the unitary and to emphasise that the brand is about the combining of two people’s knowledge. Our new design provides a strong brand statement and gives greater clarity to the product offer, making it more accessible to a wider audience and easier to shop. The new concept has been launched into over 100 Boots stores. TESTIMONIALS: “The new design works brilliantly in store, signing the Ruby and Millie brand and delivering a sense of excitement and theatre befitting the Fashion Brand area of the store. The new in store look is the key driver in achieving YOY sales uplift of over 40%, a stunning result for the brand. The Ruby & Millie brand plays an important role at Boots, offering our customers innovative cosmetics products delivered in an visually exciting format " Operations Manager, Beauty Operations, Boots
Umbro Umbro Creative Centre View Details
BRIEF: CK were asked to design a space for Umbro that would reflect the brand's heritage and convey the spirit of Umbro today. Located in the old textile quarter of Manchester, Umbro's 'Creative Centre' relaunches the brand in the city of its birth. RESPONSE: The vibrant multi-purpose space combines a design studio for product and graphic designers, as well as spaces to launch and sell-in new ranges. It also includes the 'Guild Space' which is a collaborative area where workshops can take place; training up new talent and helping energise the space from a really strong core. As a transition between these rooms we created a tunnel, a metaphor for the tunnel which takes players onto the football pitch. Here it acts as a link between the designer, business and public areas of the space. With a big screen at one end, football genealogy chalked graffiti style on the walls and Astroturf underfoot, it provides the perfect catwalk to show off the latest designs. The centre is a true reflection of the brand's heritage and conveys the spirit of Umbro today.
Yum! Restaurants International Pizza Hut Interiors and Communcations View Details
BRIEF: Yum! Restaurants International asked CK to look at thier Pizza Hut restaurant concept and inject it with personality and character, to create an engaging and energetic customer experience. RESPONSE: The new design affects all customer brand touch points ranging from the design of the restaurant interior, graphic language, menu design and uniforms through to operational and service initiatives and uses simplified architectural forms along with a pared down materials and colour palette. We introduced a new graphic language which is friendly and a little cheeky. Elsewhere, a combination of fonts, convey more directional or descriptive messages creating a variance in tone. All of the elements work together to create a lively, yet relaxed environment,, which conveys the personality of the Pizza Hut brand. The new concept has been implemented into Aberdeen with further roll out to follow.
The British Library The British Library Chopin 200th anniversary exhibition View Details
BRIEF: CK were briefed to create an exhibition at The British Library, to mark the 200th anniversary of the composer Chopin's birth and celebrate his life's work. RESPONSE: The exhibition displayed all six of The British Library's autograph manuscripts alongside portraits of the composer exhibited for the first time. We created a graphic backdrop to the exhibition which uses the symbols of sheet music and rhythmic typographic patterns to bring Chopin's story to life and portray the passion and movement found in his music, whilst the coloured panels divide the space into the different periods of his life.
